Common Questions About Chiropractic

Did you know the discs in your spine are primarily made of water?

Let’s back up for a second. In your spine, in between each vertebrae is a piece called a spinal disc. The spinal disc serves as shock absorbers in your spine, and also allows your spine to move the way a healthy spine should.

The disc is primarily made of water. That is one of the reasons why it is imperative to stay hydrated, not just with water, but with minerals and electrolytes as well.

Discs receive nutrients through a process called ‘imbibition’, this happens when the spine moves and produces a pumping action to allow fluid to move in and out of the disc. Cat camel is a great exercise that supports imbibition.

Did you know there are over 35 different techniques within chiropractic?

Although there are a lot of different techniques and approaches, they all strive to achieve the same goal. That goal is to correct spinal misalignments. By doing this chiropractors relieve interference that is being placed on the nervous system, by correcting the misalignments.

By correcting misalignment, it allows your brain to communicate with your body at an optimal level.

Some techniques are more manual, and some are more gentle. All techniques are effective, and can depend on the person.

Ever heard of the patch vs fix analogy in regards to chiropractic care?

There’s still a lot of people that will go to the chiropractor ONLY when they have pain. This is what I call the ‘patch’ course of care. What happens is the patient goes too long without maintenance care, that their spine can no longer adapt to the stress the patient is putting on their body resulting in a 10/10 score on pain. This pain could’ve been avoided completely with consistent maintenance care.

With the ‘fix’ course of care, up front the plan is more intensive, but it is better in the long run. In this case the underlying problem is able to be corrected, and has longer lasting results and pain is avoided altogether.

Most of the time, the cost is about the same regardless of what you choose.

If I feel good why should I keep going to the chiropractor?

I hear this all the time as a chiropractor. Most of the time it’s due to the misconception that chiropractic is pain based. Chiropractic is SO much more than pain relief.

It’s a lifestyle that allows you to perform at your optimal level of life, regardless of what that looks like.

Let’s start from ground zero. Misalignments of the spine happen when the body can no longer adapt to the stress that is being placed on the body. Maintenance care addresses the stress, and intercepts any increase of pain or discomfort before it has a chance to take hold.

This is why maintenance chiropractic care is imperative. The slight adaptations to stress interferes with the brains communication to the body, and it can build up over time. It’s similar to smoke building up in a room, but when the fire alarm goes off that’s the pain signal from the body. Air out the smoke before the fire alarm goes off.

Did you know chiropractic is more about function than it is about pain?

It’s a common misconception that chiropractic is only about pain. But chiropractic is SO much more than pain relief.

It’s a lifestyle that allows you to perform and function at your optimal level of life, regardless of what that looks like.

Let’s start from ground zero. Misalignments of the spine happen when the body can no longer adapt to the stress that is being placed on the body. This affects how the spine functions and moves biomechanically. Maintenance care addresses the stress, and intercepts any dysfunction or increase of pain or discomfort before it has a chance to take hold.
